Leo Chartier Sensei - ||| Sandan 参段 (3rd Degree Black Belt) Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu - Vice-President of IBK
Sensei Leonide Chartier is the head instructor for Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu and has been practicing Jujitsu for more than 12 years.
Leo Sensei is co-owner of Inukshuk Bushido Kai, along with his wife Casey Chartier Sensei, and Jesse Cummings Sensei.
He enjoys teaching dynamic throws involving circular movement and weapon techniques, particularly the hanbo (short stick). He is very proud to be a member of the instructional team for the IBK Samurai and Junior programs!
You can almost always catch him at the dojo for some late night rolling at the open mat on Wednesday nights.
Shane Turgeon Sensei - ||| Sandan 参段 (3rd Degree Black Belt) Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu
Shane Sensei began his martial arts journey at IBK in 2005 and is the longest active member of our club. He is very passionate about teaching new students and passing on his years of experience - not just in the dojo but in nightclub and event security as well - to ensure they build a solid and practical foundation from the outset.
If attending a regular class for your first time seems too intimidating, Shane Sensei offers an “Introduction to Jujitsu” class designed for two cohorts looking to start their journey in a comfortable, fun and relaxed environment. These classes work around your schedule and focus on the fundamentals of Jujitsu, as well as a brief history of the art and our club.
Outside of Jujitsu, Shane stays active with a myriad of interests and businesses. He is an award-winning nature photographer and educator, the author of the Force in the Flesh series of Star Wars tattoo books, the organizer of the Edmonton Collector Con - an event dedicated to all things comic book and toy related - and is the owner of Shades of Grey Tattoo on Whyte Ave.
Jesse Cummings Sensei - || Nidan 弐段 (2nd Degree Black Belt) Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu - President of IBK
Jesse Sensei brings a fun-loving and often humorous approach to the instruction and study of Jujitsu, but is deadly serious about its application as a means to protect oneself and others.
He has been a member of Inukshuk Bushido Kai since 2008, and co-owner and President since 2015.
Jesse Sensei combines over 11 years of Jujitsu experience with many years of practical experience working security at some of Edmonton's busiest nightclubs. He is a father of three, and takes great pride in running the IBK children's and youth programs with Leo Sensei and Casey Sensei, doing so for more than 10 years. He is a passionate believer in the power of Jujitsu to empower children, teach them virtues like honor and discipline, and build a more respectful and compassionate community.
An avid outdoorsman, Jesse Sensei fills his time outside of the dojo with fishing, hunting, and camping with his family.
Jide Olabode Sensei - || Nidan 弐段 (2nd Degree Black Belt) Shinkyuu Ryu Jujitsu
Jide Sensei joined Inukshuk Bushido Kai in March 2009, attaining the rank of Shodan in November 2013 and Nidan in May 2019.
Jide Sensei began his martial arts journey studying Aikido in 2006 before joining IBK, and has trained casually in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling since 2016.
Outside the dojo, Jide Sensei plays competitive soccer, enjoys bike riding, music, and socializing. He is a physiotherapist and enjoys helping people in their journey through recovery following all manner of illness, injury, or dysfunction. Jide Sensei is an avid believer in life-long learning.
In Sensei Jide's own words:
"I hail from Nigeria and immigrated to Canada in the winter of 2004. I met my wife here, and I am blessed with 2 beautiful daughters. The older of my 2 girls is also enrolled in Jujitsu at our club, with the younger very eager to follow suit once old enough to do so.
My personal philosophies include enjoying life to the fullest as we only live once, treating others the way I want to be treated, building tangible relationships with people I come across, and having a positive impact on the world around me."
Jide Sensei brings a wealth of martial arts knowledge, elite Jujitsu skills, and a warm and welcoming presence to IBK. We are very proud to have Jide Sensei as part of our instructional team.
Casey Chartier Sensei - | Shodan 初段 (1st Degree Black Belt) Shinkyuu Ryu Jujitsu - Vice-President of IBK
Casey Sensei has been a dedicated student of the martial arts since 2001, and has been a student and instructor of Jujitsu at IBK for more than 12 years. She combines her impressive Jujitsu skills with a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
In Sensei Casey's own words:
"Martial arts is the reason I am who I am today. It helped me through the transition of moving somewhere different, standing up to bullies; not just physically, but gave me the confidence to say something. Jujitsu is where I met my future husband, and have made some fantastic friendships."
Sensei Casey's accomplishments and contributions to the martial arts, and in making IBK the place it is today, are many. They include:
- Began her studies in Tae Kwon Do (TKD) in 2001 at Tiger Studios TaeKwonDo under head master Norm Moreland.
- Made the leadership team and started assisting in running classes in 2002
- Lived and breathed TKD classes and competitions, coached by David Froland.
- Made 1st Poom Black Belt (Junior Black Belt - under 16) in 2003, certified through the World TaeKwonDo Federation (W.T.F.). Received her 2nd Dan in 2005 and 3rd Dan in 2008.
- Made the Alberta provincial team under head coach Master Simon Chung, and competed for Team Alberta for 5 years.
- Trained under and attended seminars with Master Simon Chung, Grand Master K.H. Min, Master Paul Mullins, Master Derek Sadler and Master Richard Osness, as well as with the Women’s Korean Olympic team in 2005.
- Competed at the US Open in Dallas, Texas in February of 2005. Received 4th place for Poomse.
- Taught adult and kids classes 3 days a week, while still doing personal and Team Alberta training, spending anywhere from 16-20 hours per week at the dojang.
- Started Jujitsu in October of 2008 under head instructor Rod Heinricks.
- Started assisting/teaching kids and youth classes at IBK as a Blue Belt.
- Started teaching adult classes at IBK as a Purple Belt.
- Partnered in club ownership of IBK with Sensei Jesse and Sensei Leo after the retirement of Sensei Rod Heinricks in 2015.
- Achieved her Shodan in Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu in 2018.
- Developed the current IBK children's and youth programs with Sensei Jesse and Sensei Leo.
- Developed and runs the IBK Women’s Self Defense courses with Sensei Jesse, Sensei Leo, and Sensei Shane.
- Head Instructor for the IBK Ninjas program for ages 4-6 yrs.
The only time Sensei Casey has spent off the mats in over 19 years has been to bring her two wonderful sons into the world, and give them the attention they need in their formative years. Sensei Casey is a proud and devoted mother, and brings not only her extensive martial arts skills, but also her compassion, patience, and knowledge of the needs of young children to the IBK Ninjas Program.

Paul Fink, Sensei - | Shodan 初段 (1st Degree Black Belt) Shinkyuu Ryu Jujitsu
Sensei Paul is the newest addition to the IBK instructional Team, having received his Shodan in Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu in August of 2019.
Sensei Paul has over 14 years of experience in Jujitsu, including 4 years training in Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu with Jitsu Canada in Calgary, then joining IBK in 2010 when he moved to Edmonton.
Though having achieved his 3rd Kyu rank in Shorinji Kan, Sensei Paul insisted on nothing less than to put in the work to make his way through all of the ranks of Shinkyuu-Ryu Jujitsu, and spent almost nine years in pursuit of his Shodan. Sensei Paul is a fine example of perseverance, dedication, and humility for all of our students.
Sensei Paul's soft spoken and humble nature belies a deep knowledge of the art of Jujitsu, and his powerful and highly technical Jujitsu skills.

"I enjoy teaching throws that students didn't think they could do.. and seeing them do it. Turning perceived weaknesses into strengths."
